About Foundation

Foundation for Equality and Emancipation STER was established in 2014 by a group of researchers, lawyers, journalists and women’s rights activists. It was registered by the court on September 4th, 2014.

It is a non-profit, research and advocacy organization which focuses on two main objectives: (1) to promote the women’s history and the achievements of feminist movements, and (2) to combat discrimination of women on grounds of sex, gender, sexuality, age, health, ethnic and cultural identity, and others, and to promote gender equality and women’s rights.

“STER” is an intentionally chosen name as it was the title of one of the first Polish feminist and suffragist magazines published by the Association for Equal Rights of Women at the beginning of twentieth century. Herstory will play an important role and will interweave with our activities.

We chose as our motto a quotation from an introductory article published in the first issue of “STER” on November 30th, 1895: “What should be our helm steering wheel in this extremely arduous and hard endeavor? Exploring the past, objectively investigating phenomena which appear in our times, comparing axioms achieved by science, but first of all considering the whole issue not from the perspective of compromises but from the ethical point of view of truth and reliable justice”.

The Foundation’s statutory goals:

  1. Advocating for equal rights of women and men in all areas of social, economic, political and cultural life.
  2. Counteracting discrimination on the grounds of sex and sexual orientation, age and health conditions, nationality, race or ethnicity, religious beliefs, political beliefs and cultural differences, social and economic status, and promoting equal rights and equal status of women and men.
  3. Disseminating knowledge of women’s history and achievements of women’s movements, of feminisms, and activities of non-governmental organizations which counteract discrimination on the grounds of sex and sexual orientation.
  4. Promoting freedom of thoughts and beliefs and advocating for recognizing and observing human rights in Poland.
  5. Disseminating knowledge of gender equality and combating discrimination on the grounds of sex and sexual orientation, and other grounds among Polish society, NGOs, and private and public institutions.
  6. Promoting citizens’ democracy and social attitudes.
  7. Supporting culture, art and independent media; promoting free circulation of information and culture, including disseminating knowledge of new technologies.
