Great Coalition for Equality and Choice

Great Coalition for Equality and Choice is an informal platform of over 90 non-governmental organizations and women’s groups advocating for women’s human rights, especially for reproductive rights. All these organizations and groups have one thing in common: they strive for liberalization of the existing restrictive anti-abortion law and for consciousness raising in this field.

We believe that through cooperation and joint strategy of our activities, education and lobbying we will manage to change negative and stigmatizing approach to reproductive rights which is currently dominant in Poland, and to provide women with protection and support.

Coalition was set up as a response to massive attacks of anti-women groups which try to eliminate women’s rights. The proposals of new regulations which would threaten women’s health and life, blocking access to “day after” contraception, intimidating medical doctors in their workplace, shocking billboard campaigns, fighting against sexual education in schools and systemic weakening conditions of protection of women – these are the facts which require our active and organized resistance. We need concerted efforts to protect women against consequences of severe backlash in the field of reproductive rights.

Coalition draws its strength from 200 years of history of women’s political and civil participation. We have the capital of knowledge, practical experiences of non-governmental organizations as well as great energy of black protests which took place in 2016 and 2017.

Coalition’s goal is a complex fight for women’s human rights: quick response to identified threats, coordination of legal aid and consciousness raising. We demand reliable sexual education, high quality standards of perinatal care, full reproductive rights and elimination of violence against women.

Our vision brings us to Poland where women are free and safe. Being able to decide on your own health and life is for us a fundamental condition of women’s dignity. Education, access to contraception and legal and safe abortion are basis for freedom and safety of women in Poland.

Our mission is based on solidarity: Coalition connects efforts of Polish women’s organizations and initiatives with the aim of ensuring full implementation of women’s human rights, including access to safe and legal abortion and protection against gendered violence.
