We appeal to the Prime Minister to combat hate speech towards migrants

STER Foundation together with other member organizations of Coalition for Equal Chances called on the Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz to take effective measures to combat hate speech towards migrants.

For a couple of weeks we have seen the spread of hate speech, aggression and xenophobia against “aliens” – refugees who had to leave their countries and seek asylum in Europe due to the threat of life. The migration crisis and the need for providing asylum seekers with assistance in Poland have caused many bad emotions and racism. At the same time, there were many who wanted to build their political capital in fear, ignorance and hatred, which is conducive during the time of election campaign. Hate speech provisions of the Penal Code have been violated.

Therefore, several dozen non-governmental organizations working on human rights and anti-discrimination appealed to the Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz to take effective measures to stop the widespread hate of hatred. Member organizations of Coalition for Equal Chances called for a reliable information campaign and mobilization of the services subordinate to the Prime Minister – mainly the Police subordinate to the Minister of Internal Affairs – to respond to the manifestations of hate speech and violation of the provisions of the Penal Code. According to the Coalition, the Ministry of National Education and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education have a role to play in educating the public.
