We protest against TV spots made by the National Electoral Commission

STER Foundation together with other non-governmental organizations and prominent experts working on equal participation of women and men in public life sent an open letter to the National Electoral Commission (PKW) to protest against the lack of women in its TV spots which were aimed to encourage voters to vote in the forthcoming elections.

In an open letter to Wojciech Hermeliński, the chief of the National Electoral Commission, its signatories criticized TV spots made by PKW and recorded in public media with the aim to encourage voters to vote in the election in October, 2015. In none of the five spots, a woman is not a heroine and only men are portrayed as active citizens who actively fulfill their electoral mandate and instill civic attitudes in their children.

“We appreciate the fact that PKW promotes the participation in the election of groups which may have more difficult access to voting or due to other reasons seldom vote – e.g. people with disabilities, those who stay outside their place of residence on the election day and the youngest voters. All voters who are shown in TV spots are male!” – the signatories indicated in their letter.

“We call on the National Electoral Commission to treat women and men equally in its information relays and to present them as citizens, as informed voters and persons who can influence public life in Poland” – the signatories wrote in their letter.

The open letter to the National Electoral Commission was an initiative of the Gender Equality Observatory of the Institute of Public Affairs and journalists Anna Dryjańska and Piotr Pacewicz. It was signed by a number of non-governmental organizations such as Feminoteka Foundation, Congress of Women, Women’s Initiatives Association, KARAT Coalition, Political Critique, STER Foundation and others. We encourage all persons and institutions that do not agree with unequal treatment of women and men in public life to support the open letter to the National Electoral Commission.
